Hipstamatic and fashion photographer Chiun-Kai Shih debut Made in America FreePak at New York Fashion Week

Sounds like a fun collaboration.

Here’s a press release on this:

Hipstamatic today announced it has partnered with fashion icon and photographer, Chiun-Kai Shih, to create the Made in America FreePak, a limited edition lens and case, just in time for New York Fashion Week.

Inspired by this season’s aesthetic, the Made in America FreePak lets users effortlessly snap pictures with a reinvented look of classic beauty…. From February 8th-16th, users can download this fashion-inspired must-have lens and case for free. Beginning on February 17th, Hipstamatic will add two films, and the Made in America HipstaPak (lens, case, and two films) will go on sale for $0.99.

“A melting pot of people and ideas, America is a place where people have the freedom to create. We hope the Americana lens encourages Hipstamatic users to capture their own journeys, redefining what it means to live in America” said Lucas Buick, founder of Hipstamatic. “This year, we’re urging people to put their own spin on ‘Americana,’ and inspire others through visual storytelling.”

Curated Fashion Showcase, New York City

To celebrate the collaboration, Hipstamatic and Shih have given nine designers early access to the Americana lens to capture their journeys through New York Fashion Week, culminating in a curated fashion showcase on February 16, 2012, at a gallery in New York City.

“America is made up of millions of voices, visions, and ideas,” said Shih. “I wanted to create a lens with Hipstamatic and a showcase for the raw talent that survives and thrives as part of the American dream.”

The following designers will each have several Hipstamatic prints shot with the Americana lens on display: 3X1 Made Here Jeans, BILLYKIRK, Cole Haan Robert Geller, Saturday Surf NYC, Steven Alan, Read’s Clothing Project, Title of Work, and 16 sur 20.

Interview with iPhone photographer Nicole Sommer

Her thoughts on iPhoneography vs. traditional photography:

My studio work is much more finessed. It’s very thought-out and perfected. This project allowed me to break out of that shell of perfectionism, and it allowed me to shoot more freely. It’s definitely a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde sort of thing. There’s the studio, which is this perfected, planned out, to-the-T shot, and shooting with my phone allows me to have more fun with it, not be so controlled.

3 questions for iPhone photographer Ron Lemise

Photographer Ron Lemise will be appearing at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City on July 18, and I’ll be there to moderate the discussion with him. As a former lab technician at leading commercial photo labs (and as a sports photographer at the Meadowlands Race Track), Ron brings a fascinating perspective to the world of iPhone photography. He’s a definite convert to the world of iPhoneography, but he also misses things about the darkroom. “From time to time I’m still overcome with acute nostalgia for the chemistry of photography even though I’m a hard won convert to the convenience of the digital world,” he notes.

The Apple Store event gets underway at 7 p.m. Check out the store website for more info, or visit Ron’s Flickr stream to view his work.

I interviewed Ron about his darkroom experience, his favorite apps, and lots more.

Chase Jarvis: Update on his snapshot exhibit at the Ace Hotel

This guy is on a roll. From a blog post about the project:

Yours truly and my on-the-ground crew have been working 18+ hours per day getting this project up to speed. I’ve been shooting like mad thanks to all the inspiration coming in from around the world, AND I’ve been looking at pictures from wakeup to sleep since Thursday. Since kickoff, we had 1000 images in the first hour and are currently averaging more than 1000 images per day. Of those, we’re printing and hanging between 100 and 350 completely fresh images everyday for the physical installation. Serious affair. Now that we’re fully up to speed and…… have a workflow in place to handle the project demands, this thing is starting to really hum.

I’ve got more details and another video in an earlier post.

InvitationToHang.com: Chase Jarvis assembling the biggest gallery exhibit of snapshots, ever

I’ve been meaning to check out the Ace Hotel, as I’ve heard it’s a really fun spot to hang in NYC. I haven’t made it there yet, but now I have a great excuse: Chase Jarvis, author of the book “The Best Camera Is the One That’s With You” (something of an inspiration for my own iPhone photography book, Create Great iPhone Photos), is curating a gallery exhibit at the Ace.

Jarvis wants your snapshots for the project. Jarvis says he’ll review every photo submitted. And at the Ace, you can hang your photos and check out a real photobooth.

“I want this to be high energy and full of fun,” he says in the video for the project. “I want to put the biggest collection of snapshots ever assembled in a single gallery space in one month.”

Crazy clouds. Well, crazy after I run the photo through the Film Lab app. The app aims to recreate the effects of lots of photographic films from the past. Agfa, Fujifilm, Kodak, etc.
