Kickstarter project: The AQUA TEK S is a battery-powered underwater iPhone case

Looks rugged, that’s for sure. Here’s the deal: “The AQUA TEK S is the first ever battery powered, solar charged, rugged under water iPhone 4/4S case made with technology enthusiast and adrenaline junkies in mind. Whether you’re skiing a black diamond slope, fly fishing at your favorite lake, snorkeling an epic reef or kicking it back poolside, the AQUA TEK S can take your iPhone to places where no iPhone has gone before…. Waterproof up to 20 feet and designed to withstand drops, falls and accidental spills, the outer shell is made from tough Poly-carbonate materials with rubber grips for added protection.”

Also: “The AQUA TEK S’ built in battery and solar charger gives users peace of mind about running out of power while hiking, skiing, camping and lounging. Easily charge and sync the iPhone in the AQUA TEK S by opening the thumb screw and attaching a micro USB to the connector.”

May have to get one of these. Check it out.

Wood iPhone camera case in walnut or bamboo, for $42
Love the idea and look of this case from Photojojo, though I sort of like my iPhone to look like an iPhone (hence the clear case I’ve been using for a while).

Joy Factory’s waterproof case for the iPhone 4

I’m a fan of the Aquapac (watch my video, where I take it into the ocean), but this looks pretty cool, too.

Two iPhone cases for iPhone photographers, including one with a shutter button

Canopy is introducing two iPhone cases, including one that’s apparently got the ability to snap photos from a button on the case. Both cases have tripod mounts right on the case. The Kapok, with the shutter-button capabilities, goes for $65.95, while the Jumba costs $39.95. You can pre-order them now.

About a minute into the video, the shutter-button and other camera features are explained (“Now I can use my iPhone like a point-and-shoot camera”), and they look really, really cool.

Now, the question is: How does Canopy avoid the problems encountered by tap tap tap, the developer of Camera+, when that company used the iPhone hardware for a shutter button?

I plan to post more about these products soon, including info on their inspiration and details on that shutter button.

For now, here’s some info from the features list for the Kapok:

  • Dual, two stage buttons - Performs unique functions based on application. SDK development kit available open source. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Camera tools application. Free app downloadable from iTunes allows you to control iPhone camera functions and settings just like a point and shoot camera.

The company website includes a page for developers, where there’s a downloadable SDK (software development kit). Any developers out there looking to tap into that? Investigate? It seems like that would provide some interesting hints about what’s possible with the Canopy cases and app.
